We’re Going to Maui!

February 23, 2017 31 Comments

You guys! I can’t believe I’m going to Hawaii tomorrow! I never travel this much, but I have three big trips lined up, and I can’t wait to share everything with you guys on my blog. Kins and Char will be joining me on this trip to Maui, so I thought it would be fun to do a roundup/wishlist of things I’m thinking about bringing on the trip for us. Also, this will be the longest plane ride Kins and Char will be on. I have some movies and games I’m planning to download, but do you guys have tips and tricks for a comfy plane ride?!

Bring lots of snacks!! My 3 year old son and I just did a 5 hour flight and he did great! We don’t have iPads and there weren’t any screens on the plane, but he was so content with snack, books, and coloring. The window is a distraction, too. Most kids love looking out of the window!! Good luck!

When my younger cousins went to hawaii they didn’t mind the plane ride. Their mom wrapped gifts and every hour they got a present. Just small presents like a travel board game or stuffed animal or bubbles to blow. having something to unwrap kept things fun !!!

You must do the rainforest and “the road to Hana” you can drive up this huge volcano and the rain forest was super fun! My parents took me when I was 9 and it was awesome! We did a sunset cruise also and got to see whales and dolphins which is always a plus! So many fun things to do in Maui!

If you can get up super early, the sunrise on Halelaka is beautiful! If you’re staying on the West side of the island, there is a farmers market every morning with fresh fruits, bagels, etc near Bad Ass Coffee Co. For shopping check out Whalers Village near Black Rock, and be sure to check out Lahaina and all the restraunts and shopping there! Have fun!

I go to Hawaii once every year, and it’s by far my favorite island!! You have to do road to Hana. You get to see so many waterfalls and a black sand beach, so breathtaking!! Get shave ice anywhere you can, so amazing. Go to Lahaina at night for shopping and hula shows!

My son and I are doing a 5 hour plane ride tomorrow, which is the longest I’ve ever done by myself with him too! I went to Target today and seriously raided the dollar section. They have so many fun stamp books, coloring, glitter dough, and more! So maybe hit that up and let them pick out stuff they want to do on the plane! Also, snacks. Obvi.

☀️ Beyond excited you chose Maui! ? It’s seriously perfection. Here is a link to a plane/travel DIY play box for Kins & Char to keep entertained with
Some of my favorite restaurants in Maui are:
•Mama’s Fish House –it’s probably the most authentic restaurant on Maui! It has an island-y/Polynesian theme that I love! Super boho.
•Wow Wow Hawaiian Lemonade (SO GOOD + the mason jar lemonade they have are GOALS)?
•Bamboo Fresh Cafe –healthy & so good. I personally love it, but the rating on google is even 5.0 stars!
My fave Maui landmarks & entertainment: #adventure
•DT Fleming Beach Park & Maluaka Beach are my two fav. beaches. DT Fleming has lifeguards on duty which I love.
•For SUPER FUN nature walks, I like Iao Valley & Haleakala National Park. Iao Valley is definitely the more tough & dangerous putt of the two though. It was closed not too long ago, but I think it is open again 😉
•Lahaina may not be where you are staying in Maui, but every city/town on the Hawaiian islands never seem to be too far from the other.–the Old Lahaina Luau is MUST! ? They have a luau + BEACHSIDE eatery! If in Lahaina, I would also check out their mall! They have a lot of small authentic Hawaiian clothing/souvenir shops that I’d definitely check out.
I hope you, kins, & char have a blessed vacay! XO, Kim ? Your safe travels will be in my prayers 🙂

    Hi Amanda

Maui is beautiful! I went there on my honeymoon with my x-husband. If you do the road to hana be careful it can get narrow and busy with tourists.
I flew from Australia so it was a longer plane ride for me.
My advice is to take everything you can on the plane for your girls. If they’re like my daughter they need lots to keep them occupied. Personally I’d take a tablet for them each with wireless headphones, coloring books, snacks, fav books to read etc.
Hope you three have the best time! Could you let me know how your girls go on the plane? My daughter is 6 and mildly autistic she has yet to travel on a plane… my partner and I want to take her to Canada so my daughter and I can meet his family its like a 24hr flight! Which I dont intend on doing directly thats for sure lol
Have an amazing time with your beautiful girls! Mummy + daughter time is amazing I love it too! Xx

Definitely go to slappy cakes! You get to make/design your own pancakes, the girls will love it! I also recommend going to The Gazebo, it has great breakfast but a long wait so get there early! For the plane coloring is a great option along with snacks of course!

Hi Amanda! Love your blog and all your advice:) been following you since Ben’s season!
I know this is random and maybe your blog is not the best avenue for this, but I’m helping to organize a fundraiser in fall for a Newport-based charity does free reconstructive surgery for children living in third-world countries where they lack those resources. If you might be interested in coming to the event as a celebrity guest, that would be literally amazing and SO helpful for our cause.
I left the charity’s website here in the details or you can please email me if you’re open to getting more info! Praying I hear from you soon 🙂

For the plane ride, wrap little gifts. Coloring book, little toys anything they can open will keep there attention and also keep them behaved. In Maui you should go see the turtles! Eat at longhis, Dukes, and Kimos( it’s like eating on the water and you can watch all the boats go by!)

Definitely the ‘Road to Hana’! The drive in itself is beautiful, but there are also amazing places to stop along the way. There are many waterfalls, beaches, and fresh fruit stands!

I’m from Maui and I highly recommend baby beach Lahaina (left side entrance). It’s a great beach for little and it’s beautiful. Also flatbread Paia, cafe de Amis and all the great shopping in Paia are some of our favs. The lavender farm (lavender scones and coffee) is a stunning view of maui in the morning as well as walking Thompson road in Kula.

Some hotels have lei making and hula classes, your girls would love them! Haleakala is gorgeous any time of the day.

Hi amanda! big fan of you and your girls, such style icons ! My family owns a house on kanapali beach in maui, it’s the best place to go !
    some restaurant suggestions:
honu- lahaina, great for sunset and such good seafood! good kids menu as well
roys- kanapali, hawaiian infused food so good! have a little kids menu that’s so gourmet and you have to get the chocolate soufflé !
gazebo- good for breakfast but go early !! fills up so fast, and get the rice it sounds weird but is amazing
slappy cakes- make your own pancakes at the table, your girls will LOVE !
whalers village for shopping- on kanapali beach, so many unique stores and popular brand names
longhis- italian and seafood in lahaina, perfect at sunset !
there is a full sized macy’s in the hyatt on kanapali they have the cutest bathing suits always
lahaina is great for walking anytime of day they have cute shops and lots and lots of shaved ice and iced cream !

you have to bring pineapple home from there, i promise there’s nothing like it. so jealous that you’re going ! have the best time.

I’ve been going to Maui before I could talk and now I’m in high school, and my mom used to do the little presents for us when we were about that age! Worked great for us! One of my favorite places of course is Ululani’s shave ice, and if you are staying in Ka’anapali go to the one in front of the Hyatt for sure. I also love Aloha Mixed Plate and the Old Lahaina Luau next door to it! They’re both very kid friendly and right on the water! Island Vintage Coffee has my favorite drink on the planet and that is the Iced Island Latte! Yum! Leilani’s In Ka’anapali is bomb and the huge slice of their Hula Pie is super fun to share (and is also my favorite dessert ever)! Also gotta check out Mama’s Fish house!! It has the best food in the Pacific and has the traditional Hawaiian decor and is on the beach!

I remember going to Hana and Haleakala when I was little and it’s a lot of windy driving and being a kid it wasnt fun sitting in the back and feeling sick. It was the same with the sun rise but just EARLY in the morning (my little brother and I threw up on the drive back?). So maybe save those for another trip without the kids or when they are older.

    Have fun on your trip!
